Robert Munning (born 1981) is a Dutch painter based in the southern part of the Netherlands, where he lives close to a National Park that continues to inform his sense of atmosphere and quiet observation.
After completing a degree in psychology in 2004, he has worked with people with mental disabilities, while developing his artistic practice alongside it. This background has shaped a deep sensitivity to the inner world — something that resonates throughout his work.
His paintings explore stillness, presence, and a search for essence. Rather than focusing solely on appearance, he is interested in what it feels like to exist within a moment. Through a layered and intuitive process, he balances control with surrender, allowing the image to gradually emerge.
Alongside his work and artistic practice, Munning has spent extended periods traveling, often through long backpacking journeys across different continents. These experiences continue to inform his perspective, reinforcing a sense of openness, attention, and connection to the present moment.
